THE MELLOR BROTHERS LIFT AND SEPARATE

This Langley white metal kit of a Scammell Highwayman was solder assembled and awaiting the construction and fitting of a Weaver crane unit at the time that this photograph was taken at the Cheltenham GWR Modellers Exhibition in April 2009. Fitted with tricycle wings, the 4x2 tractor unit was used for fleet breakdown recovery by Gloucestershire County Council Highways Department from its depot at Shephard Avenue, off Cole Avenue in Gloucester.

Further up the Scammell recovery range meanwhile is this Pioneer in the colours of Moreton C. Cullimore of Saul  and named Dr Alexander Manette, a character in Charles Dicken's novel "A Tale of Two Cities".

In the story, Dr Alexander Manette is a brilliant physician who spends eighteen years in Paris's Bastille making shoes to take his mind off the horrific conditions of the prison. As he overcomes his past as a prisoner, however, he proves to be a kind, loving father who prizes his daughter’s Lucie's happiness above all things. When Charles Darnay is arrested in France, Dr Manette is his witness that he is innocent. Unfortunately, when Darnay is arrested again, a diary that Manette wrote when he was in jail sends Darnay back to prison. Darnay is forced to go again, but Sydney Carton (out of love for Lucie Manette) takes his place in the guillotine and dies for him.
