Haulage in bold, changing stations in CAPITALS

On Sunday 24 March 2019 I caught the 0937 GWR service from GLOUCESTER to SWINDON en route to HACKNEY DOWNS and an exploration of railways of North London. Before boarding. Service 2B90 was formed by dhmu 165 129 I noted 150 255 / 150 267, 166 215/166 208 and 166 317.

At SWINDON I noted 800 014 bearing the names “Edith New” and “Megan Lloyd George” as well as 800 015. My connection was due to have been a 9 car Hitachi IEP set departing at 1035 but was instead formed of 5 car set 802 014 which departed at 1048. This was due to the 9 car set failing and 802 014 being the only available substitute. No seat reservations applied and I only sat down east of Reading. Noted on the way were:

PADDINGTON 802 009, 802 104.

From PADDINGTON I boarded Circle Line train 21345 to EDGWARE ROAD and from there Hammersmith and City Line 21548 to LIVERPOOL STREET. Once back on Network Rail 317 882 took me to HACKNEY DOWNS at 1254. Noted on the way were 317 881, 315 809 and 379 003/ 379 005.

From Room 316 of the Hackney Central Travelodge I had a view of the North London Line from Homerton to Dalston Kingsland, passenger traffic being formed mainly by Class 378 Capitalstar emus along with diesel locomotives such as 70 010 and 66 619 hauling either shipping containers or open box wagons filled with ballast.

Exploring the area south of the Travelodge I found myself at LONDON FIELDS station. Here, having noted 317 719 and 315 814/ 315 802 I boarded 307 709 to explore the territory to the north by way of Hackney Downs, Rectory Road, Stoke Newington, Stamford Hill, Seven Sisters, Bruce Grove, White Hart Lane, Silver Street, Lower Edmonton, Southbury and TURKEY STREET before time constraints forced me to return aboard 317 889.

On arrival at LIVERPOOL STREET I noted 90 002 and 90 007 in Greater Anglia livery before travelling to BAKER STREET via the Metropolitan Line and then used the Hammersmith and City Line to reach PADDINGTON.

Before leaving for GLOUCESTER aboard 800 303 I noted 43 009, 332 005 and 800 301, while en route to Reading I noted 43156, 66 610, 387 154 and 360 205. Reading itself yielded the sights of 57 603"Tintagel Castle", 221 144, 387 157 and 387 170 while at Didcot I saw 66 090, 387 187 and Plasser and Theurer tamper DR73905. Noted at Swindon was 150 207.
